SEOUL, South Korea – Nov. 21, 2019 – An independent scrapyard operator switched to an Allison Transmission equipped five-ton crane to reduce fatigue and gain efficiencies as he transports tiles and building supplies on the increasingly crowded
roads of the metro area in Korea.
Mun Geun-sik, who operates a scrapyard in Nam-gu, Incheon, has used trucks with manual transmissions for more than 25 years. That changed in 2014 when the task of negotiating congested traffic became intolerable. He is very pleased with the decision to
switch to Allison Automatics because he suffers less fatigue and enjoys lower maintenance costs and greater productivity.
“I usually drive in downtown Seoul, and the fatigue is now incomparably lower because I don’t have to handle the clutch and the gear as with a manual or automated manual transmission,” said Mun. “There is also no need to regularly
replace the disc brakes as with manual or automated manual transmissions. Vehicles with Allison products afford lower maintenance costs and higher productivity.”
While the manual clutch pedal is gone in an automated manual transmission (AMT), a mechanical clutch still facilitates the vehicle’s launch. This mechanical clutch will wear and eventually burn out and need traditional maintenance and replacement,
which means a vehicle spends more time for repair and less time on the road. Allison Automatics are unique because the patented torque converter experiences very little wear and Allison transmissions require only periodic fluid and filter changes
to maintain peak performance.
“Nowadays, drivers of crane trucks prefer fully automatic transmissions, which do not require gear and clutch control,” said Kyoungmee Lee, Regional Director at Allison Transmission, “We will actively inform consumers of the strengths
of Allison’s products, such as economic feasibility, productivity and power.”
Allison Transmission Korea will increase its market leadership in the Korean special vehicle market this year. Indeed, drivers who use special vehicles equipped with Allison Automatics are satisfied with the performance and benefits that Allison fully
automatic transmissions bring.
